The Times of Northwest Indiana Newspaper Information

The Times of Northwest Indiana is a daily newspaper headquartered in Munster, Indiana. The Times is the second largest of Indiana's 76 daily newspapers, The Indianapolis Star being the largest. When the Audit Bureau of Circulation's updated circulation numbers were released on April 28, 2008, The Times was listed as the fastest-growing English-language paper in the country with circulation of more than 50,000 daily, posting a 3 percent gain year-over-year. The Times' sports section was named a Top 10 daily section in 2007 by the Associated Press Sports Editors and it was named Indiana's Best Sports Section by the Hoosier State Press Association.

The paper was founded on June 18, 1906, as The Lake County Times. Its founder, Simon McHie, was a native of a small town along the Niagara River in Canada. In 1933, the name was changed to The Hammond Times, and it became an afternoon paper serving Hammond, Whiting, and East Chicago. In May 1962, the McHie family sold the publication to Robert S. Howard. The paper expanded in 1967 and was rebranded The Times. Offices were moved to Munster in 1989, and the paper began morning delivery and began printing different editions based on distribution region. The paper was bought in April 2002 by Lee Enterprises.
